my girlfrend has just finished medication for herpes. How long should we wait for sex and should we use condoms?

You are relatively safe if your girlfriend takes antiviral medication, use condoms and you avoid sex when she has an outbreak.

I have always been careful, making sure my partners wore condoms. Which just goes to show that condoms don't necesarily protect you.

Condoms are good for now but many consider not using them after being with a partner for a while. Just avoiding sex during outbreaks brings you risk of getting the virus from her down to 8% per year of frequent sex. Using valtrex OR condoms brings it to 4%, and using all three brings it to 2%. So over time as both of your comfort level grows, that 2% difference might not be worth the constant condom use.

There is what I found on the web:

From a positive female to a negative male the stats are:

Avoid sex during an OB 4%

Using condoms OR meds 2%

Using condoms AND meds 1%

This is over the course of a year.
