This virus can be primarily categorized into two kinds, the HSV-1, which usually causes sores around the mouth region and another is HSV-2 that causes blisters around the genital area. Both cases can be equally painful and if these regions are left untreated, it can lead to several other complications.

This virus lies dormant for a score of years, and sometimes even for the whole life. But you must keep in mind, that herpes by nature are extremely contagious. Be it through skin or saliva, or for that matter, mucous, the virus can easily spread from one person to another.

Herpes blisters caused due to the HSV-1 virus are usually known as fever blisters or cold sores. Though mostly the children within the age bracket of one to two years are affected by this virus, they may affect people of other ages as well. The outbreak is usually experienced when the sufferer feels an itching, tingling or numb sensation around the mouth region.

But when the herpes blisters erupt, it causes immense pain. Though the healing process is quick enough, the blisters gradually change their appearance from small sized grey colored ulcers enveloped by ruddiness. As time progresses, the ulcers will gradually lead their way to scabs or crusts and eventually dry off.

The eruptions that are caused by HSV-2 virus are more often than not known as genital herpes. Sexually active adults or teenagers are the victims of this virus. The males usually experience the outbreak on their penis while the female around their vaginal zone and in some cases the cervix as well. Those suffering generally experience this ailment anywhere from one to four outbreaks per year. The average time taken to recover is anywhere from one to two or may be three weeks.
